Promoting Democratic Discourse: The NFDI-FW de Klerk Foundation Inter-School Debate on Absolute Freedom of Speech

The National Foundations Dialogue Initiative (NFDI) in partnership with the FW de Klerk Foundation is glad to announce the success of a recent inter-school debate held at King David High School (Victory Park). Bringing together two distinguished institutions, Randfontein High School and King David High School (Victory Park), the debate showcased the contrasting viewpoints on the motion, ensuring a stimulating and intellectually invigorating discussion. The debaters, with their remarkable eloquence and analytical prowess, succeeded in captivating the audience with their impassioned arguments and nuanced exchanges of ideas. The event was themed “Absolute free speech in a functional democracy.” King David High School (Victory Park) was pronounced the winner. All participants received medals. Let us continue to advocate for discourse, tolerance, and open-mindedness in order to build a stronger democracy.

The NFDI and the FW de Klerk Foundation recognizes the value of utilizing “Absolute free speech in a functional democracy” as a foundation to enlighten and educate students about their constitutional rights. However, we also acknowledge the significance of expanding the discourse on Free Speech to encompass the impact of social media platforms. This connection is vital in equipping students to engage in discussions about social media and bullying.
